Who is Cokie Roberts?
Cokie Roberts was an American journalist and bestselling author. She was born on December 27, 1943, in Lousiana, US. Recently, the journalist died on September 17, 2019. Cokie was born to Hale Boggs, and Lindy Boggs, with the zodiac sign Capricorn. She was born as Mary Martha Corinne Morrison Claiborne Boggs. “Cokie” is her nickname which was given by her brother Tommy. Tommy gave her a name when he was a child, as he couldn’t pronounce her given name “Corinne”. Cokie grew up with her sister and brother. Further, she holds an American nationality.
Education
Cokie first went to the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans. Later, she completed her schooling from Stone Ridge School. Both the school was a girl school. Cokie then enrolled in Wellesley College. In 1964, she completed his graduation from there with a BA in Political Science.
Cokie Roberts Career
Cokie started her career in journalism at WRC-TV. She was a host of the program “Meeting of the Minds”. Later, in 1967, she worked as a reporter for Cowles Communications. Also, she worked as a producer for WNEW-TV, and then for KNBC-TV of the children’s program “Serendipity”. Later, she worked for CBS News in Athens, Greece, as a stringer.
In 1978, Cokie worked for NPR. She was the congressional correspondent for more than ten years. Moreover, she worked as a contributor to PBS in the news program “MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour”. She covered the news of the Iran-Contra Affair for the program. This made her win the Edward Weintal Prize in 1988 for the Diplomatic Reporting. In addition, she co-hosted a weekly public television program on Congress, “The Lawmakers” from 1981 to 1984.
Furthermore, Cokie worked for ABC News in 1988 as a political correspondent. Also, she continued her part-time as a political commentator at NPR. In 1989, while she was in Guatemala, Sister Dianna Ortiz was raped and tortured by a government-backed death squad. Cokie interviewed her, and Ortiz stated that American was among her captors. Though Cokie implied Ortiz was lying, Ortiz later won a lawsuit against a Guatemalan.
Later, in 1992, Cokie worked again for NPR, as a commentator and a senior news analyst. Also, she was the co-anchor of the ABC News, “This Week with Sam Donaldson & Cokie Roberts” from 1996 to 2002. She covered news about politics, Congress, and public policy.
Personal Life
Cokie Roberts was married to Steven V. Roberts. Steven was a fellow journalist and professor. They met in 1962 when she was 18 and he was 19. Then, in 1966, the couple tied the knot. Also, they were blessed with two children.
Death
Unfortunately, Cokie Robert was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002. Though she was treated on time successfully, she died from complications of the disease. She died on September 17, 2019, in Washington, DC.
