Who is Dave Gibbons?

David Chester Gibbons or Dave Gibbons is a professional English comic artist and writer. He is a writer best known for collaborations with writer Alan Moore in various miniseries. He was born on the 14th of April, 1949 in London. Furthermore, he was an artist for 2000 AD. He contributed a large body of work from its first issue in 1977 for it.

Career

Gibbons broke into British Comics working on horror and action titles for both IPC and  DC Thomson. He was brought in as an Art Director when 2000 AD was set up. Also, he drew one of the original strips in “Prog1”, occasional Future shock and  Harlem Heroes. He began illustrating Dan Dare after the first year. It was a cherished project for Gibbons who had been a fan of the original series.

He was also known to the readers of the IPC title Tornado by sight and not by name. Gibbons became the lead artist on Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly after leaving 2000AD. He drew the main comic strip for most of the issues from #1 until #69.

Furthermore, Gibbons was one of the British Comic talents that were identified by Len Wein in 1982. He was hired to draw Green Lantern for DC. Also, he is best known in the US for collaborating with Alan Moore on Watchmen, the 12-issue limited series. Watchmen is now one of the best-selling graphic novels of all time

The Originals is Gibbons’ most recent complete work, which is a black and white graphic novel. He scripted as well as drew the novel himself. The work is published by Vertigo and is set shortly. However, the book draws heavily on the imagery of the Mods and Rockers of the 1960s.

The DC Comics six-issue limited series The Rann/Thanagar War is one of his current projects. Some other recent projects include Green Lantern Corps: Recharge. Furthermore, Gibbons also provides the cover artwork for the Wildstorm six-issue limited series, Albion which is plotted by Alan Moore and written by his daughter Leah and her husband.

Dave was awarded the Inkpot Award in 1986. Furthermore, in 1987, he won the Jack Kirby Awards in two categories; the Best New Series for Watchmen and Best Writer/Artist for the same movie. He was also nominated for Jack Kirby Awards for the Best Single Issue in 1986 and 1987 for Superman and Watchmen respectively.
