Terrence McNally was born on the 3rd of November, 1938, under the name Terrence McNally in St. Petersburgh, Florida, U.S. He was the son of Hubert McNally and Dorothy McNally. His parents were transplanted New Yorkers who ran a seaside bar and grill. Later, Hubert managed a Schlitz beer distributorship as an owner. Furthermore, the details about his siblings are unknown.

Terrence’s first play was And Things That Go Bump in the Night that premiered on the 4th of February, 1964. In 1968, he wrote the play Botticelli. In the same year, he wrote three plays titled Sweet Eros, Witness, and Cuba Si!. The following year, he wrote the plays Bringing It All Back Home and Next. After two years, in 1971, Terrence wrote Where Has Tommy Flowers Gone?.

Furthermore, he then wrote Whiskey in 1973 and Bad Habits and The Tubs in 1974. He then wrote the play The Ritz in 1975.
