Who Was Liam Payne?

Liam Payne was an English singer, songwriter, and actor. He was best known as a member of the boyband One Direction. He showed an interest in singing from early childhood. He first wanted to be an Olympic athlete and trained at Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club, but later turned his focus to music.

He first came to public attention on the TV talent show The X Factor. He did not win as a solo contestant, but he and four other contestants (Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Niall Horan) were brought together to form One Direction. Liam James Payne was born on August 29, 1993, in Wolverhampton, England. His father, Geoff Payne, was a fitter. His mother, Karen Payne, was a nurse. He had two older sisters, Nicola and Ruth. He died on October 16, 2024, at age 31.

Early Career to 2016

Payne first auditioned for The X Factor in 2008 at age fourteen, but did not make it. He tried again in the show’s seventh series in 2010. Judge Nicole Scherzinger suggested he team up with four other contestants (Harry, Niall, Louis, and Zayn) who also had not advanced as solo acts. The group, One Direction, finished third on the show but quickly became hugely popular. They signed with Syco Records and Columbia Records. Their 2011 debut album, Up All Night, was a worldwide hit, led by the single “What Makes You Beautiful.”

2012 to 2016

One Direction released Take Me Home (2012), one of the best-selling albums of that year, and Midnight Memories (2013), which included the hits “Best Song Ever” and “Story of My Life.” A concert documentary, One Direction: This Is Us, also came out in 2013. Their fourth album, Four (2014), reached number one in eighteen countries and included the singles “Steal My Girl” and “Night Changes.” Their fifth and final group album, Made in the A.M. (2015), topped the UK charts and reached number two in the US. Payne also co-wrote “The Night We Met” with Jamie Scott. The band went on indefinite hiatus in early 2016.

2017 to 2024

After the hiatus, Payne signed with Republic Records. He released his debut solo single, “Strip That Down,” in May 2017, which reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. He followed it with “Bedroom Floor” (with Zedd), “For You” (with Rita Ora, for the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack), and “Familiar” (with J Balvin) in 2018. He also released the EP “First Time with French Montana” and sang on Jonas Blue’s “Polaroid.” His debut solo album, LP1, came out in December 2019 to mixed reviews but charted in the UK. In 2020 he teamed up with Alesso on “Midnight.”

In his final years, Payne spoke openly about struggling with substance use. He entered rehab in 2023 and said in a video that he had felt like he had become someone he no longer recognized. At the time, he said he had been sober for six months.

Death

Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024. He fell from the balcony of his hotel room on the third floor of the Casa Sur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was in the city to watch former bandmate Niall Horan perform. Just before his death, hotel staff called emergency services and said a guest seemed to be drunk or on drugs. By the time help arrived, Payne had already fallen and could not be saved.

Doctors did an autopsy soon after. They found he died from polytrauma, which means serious injuries to many parts of the body, along with heavy internal and external bleeding. These injuries matched a fall from a height. Doctors found no signs that anyone else was involved in his fall. A later toxicology test found alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his body. A UK inquest also confirmed polytrauma as his medical cause of death.

Argentina charged five people over his death: his friend Roger Nores, two hotel workers, and two men accused of selling him drugs. Over the next two years, courts cleared Nores and the hotel workers, ruling that they were not legally responsible for Payne’s own choices. These rulings became final in mid 2026. The case against the two men accused of selling drugs is still separate. Both were released from custody in early 2026, while that investigation continues.

Payne was buried in the UK in November 2024. His three surviving bandmates, his family, and many friends from the music industry attended his funeral. Fans and musicians around the world shared tributes, and One Direction’s music saw a large rise in streams and sales after his death.

Beyond Music

Payne supported UNICEF, including UNICEF UK’s Children in Danger Summer Disease Appeal. He also supported the cancer charity CLIC Sargent, and served as an ambassador for the Sustainable Development Goals and for Trekstock.

Payne dated fellow X Factor alum Danielle Peazer on and off between 2012 and 2013. He then dated singer Cheryl (Cheryl Cole) from 2016 to 2018. They had a son together, Bear Grey, born in March 2017. Payne later dated Maya Henry, on and off, starting around 2018 to 2019. The couple got engaged in August 2020 but split for good in 2022. At the time of his death, Payne was in a relationship with American social media influencer Kate Cassidy, whom he had been dating on and off since 2022. Cassidy had been traveling with him in Argentina but left the country two days before he died.
