The UEFA Champions League is a football competition that happens annually. It is hence organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The contestants of these competitions are top-division European clubs. UCL is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world and also the most prestigious club competition in European football.

Champions League was introduced as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup in 1955. It was also initially a straight knockout tournament that was open only to the champion club of each national championship. The competition got its current name in 1992.

The Champions League begins in late June with a preliminary round, three qualifying rounds and a play-off round, which is hence all played over two legs in its present format. The six surviving teams from the rounds enter the group stage, who join the 26 teams who qualified in advance. The 32 teams are also drawn into eight groups of four teams and play in a double round-robin system. The eight group winners and runners-up proceed to the knockout phase along with the final match in late May or early June. The winner of the Champions League qualifies for the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in that following year.

Real Madrid is also the most successful club winning over 13 times in the tournament’s history. Liverpool is hence the reigning champions who beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in 2019. England also has the largest number of winning teams as 5 of the country’s club has won the title.
