Anders Lee

Anders Mark Lee is an American professional ice hockey player. He plays for the team New York Islanders as a Captain in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was born on the 3rd of July, 1990 in Edina, Minnesota, to Thomas (Tom) and Lisa Lee.

Lee transferred to Saint Thomas Academy High School from Edina High School in Mendota Heights in 2004. He hence made the varsity ice hockey team as an eighth-grader. He also won the high school hockey tournament in 2006 being a part of St. Thomas Academy’s Class A.  Lee transferred back to Edina and made an immediate impact in both football and hockey. He played hockey and finished third in scoring for his team with 54 points.

Anders also got into selection for the Pioneer Press All-State First Team. He hence received an honorable mention to the AP All-State Team. He also played varsity baseball as both pitcher and third baseman in the spring. Lee finished as one of the top scorers in the league during his senior year and led the Hornets to a 24-3 regular-season record and 2009 high school hockey tournament appearance. Lee was one of the best athletes in the states of Minnesota by many scouts. He chose hockey over football.

Lee got into selection as the 151st overall by the New York Islanders in the 2009 National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Green Bay Gamblers in the United States Hockey League(USHL) in the 2009-10 season and was their leading scorer and was also chosen for the 2010 All-Star Game. He got the name as Playoff MVP after scoring 10 goals and 12 assists in 12 playoff contests. Also named as “Rookie of the Year” for the season, Lee became the second-leading scorer for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) as a freshman in the following season. Lee was the second-leading scorer for Notre Dame as a sophomore in the 2011-12 season scoring 17 goals with 17 assists.

Anders Lee received his first NHL call-up during the 2012–13 season and made his NHL debut for the New York Islanders on April 2, 2013, against the Winnipeg Jets. He scored his first NHL goal on his first shot in that game.

Lee developed into an important offensive player for the Islanders. During the 2016–17 season, he scored 34 goals and received the Bob Nystrom Award, which recognizes an Islanders player who demonstrates leadership, hustle and dedication.

The following season became one of the strongest offensive campaigns of his career. Lee scored 40 goals and 22 assists for 62 points in 2017–18. He was also nominated for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which recognizes NHL players for leadership and humanitarian contributions.

Lee became the 15th captain in New York Islanders history in October 2018. He went on to hold the captaincy for eight seasons, through the end of the 2025–26 season. Over 14 seasons with New York, he played 923 regular-season games, scoring 308 goals and recording 549 points. He ranks fifth in Islanders history in games played, fourth in goals and 10th in points.

During the 2025–26 season, his final campaign with the Islanders, Lee recorded 19 goals and 23 assists for 42 points in 82 games. After becoming an unrestricted free agent, he signed a three-year, $16.2 million contract with the Utah Mammoth on July 1, 2026, with an average annual value of $5.4 million.

The 2026–27 season marks Lee’s 15th NHL season and his first with Utah. He joins a young Mammoth team as a veteran forward, bringing experience from more than 900 NHL regular-season games. The Mammoth reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 2026 before losing to the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference First Round.

Lee has also represented the United States at three IIHF Men’s World Championships. He won bronze medals with Team USA in 2015 and 2018 and finished fifth with the team in 2017. Across those tournaments, he recorded 10 goals and seven assists in 28 games.

Anders Lee has also become known for his charitable work. He partnered with Jam Kancer in the Kan after being inspired by cancer patient Fenov Pierre-Louis. Lee has hosted fundraising events supporting families affected by cancer, and his efforts have helped the organization raise more than $2.5 million. In 2024, he received the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for his leadership and humanitarian contributions.

Lee also established the Fenov Scholars program in memory of Pierre-Louis. The scholarship supports graduating high school seniors who have helped or supported someone affected by cancer. In 2026, the program continued awarding scholarships, while the separate AIT Fenov Pierre-Louis Memorial Scholarship also announced its 2026 recipient.

In June 2026, Lee also participated in a Kancer Jam event at Syosset High School that raised $56,902 for the Fenov Scholar program.

Lee is married to Grace Lee, and the couple has two daughters. He also has two dogs, Gordie and Howie.
