James, from January 2017 through December 2018, served as the 26th United States Secretary of Defense. He is a retired United States Marine Corps general and served in the War in Afghanistan, the Persian Gulf War, and the Iraq War.

Early Life

James was born to Lucille Mattis and John West Mattis, a merchant marine. His father moved to Richland, Washington, for working to the Manhattan Project at a plant supply in the fissile material. James attended Richland High School and graduated in 1968. He gained a degree in Bachelor of Arts in history. He earned the degree in 1971 from Central Washington University. Also, he received a degree in Master of Arts in 1994 from the National War College of National Defense University.

James, through the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, commissioned in the Marine Corps. Among his peers for “intellectualism”, he earned an honor among associates. Eventually, he advanced to the rank of general. James commanded the United States Joint Forces Command, from 2007 to 2010. Also, from 2010 to 2013, he served as Supreme Allied Commander Transformation of NATO, along with Admiral Bob Harward working as a Deputy Commander. After his retirement from the military, James worked in several private sector roles. His work also included the board member of Theranos.

Furthermore, James was a nominee by the President-elect Donald Trump as Secretary of Defense. On January 20, 2017, Senate confirmed him as the Secretary of Defense. In the wake of the 2017 North Korea crisis, James affirmed the United States’ commitment to defending the longtime ally South Korea. He stressed the “threat to the American-led world order”, for the opponent proposed collaboration with Russia and Chinese.

With the Trump administration policies like withdrawal from the ran nuclear deal, James voiced his disagreement. Also, he voiced for the budget cuts preventing the skill for controlling the significants of climate change, and withdrawals of troops from Afghanistan and Syria. However, he failed to convince Trump, on December 20, 2018, for reconsidering his decision to withdraw all American troops from Syria. On February 28, 2019, he stated his resignation effective, with the anger of language of the resignation letter. Also, he accelerated his departure date to January 1.
