Rey Mysterio or Oscar Gutierrez is an American professional wrestler currently signed to WWE. He performs on the Raw brand under the ring name Rey Mysterio. In 1989, he began his professional wrestling career at the age of 14. He is best known for his popular high flying Lucha Libre style which is his trademark. Mysterio’s tenure with WWE started in the year 2020 and lasted till February 2015. Despite of being only five feet and six inches tall, he didn’t stop pursuing his dreams. In his long career, he received numerous championships such as the “World Championship Wrestling Cruiser Weight Championship,” “World Wrestling Association Lightweight Championship” and “World Wrestling Entertainment Championship.”

Rey was born on December 11, 1974, in Chula Vista, California, United States. He is currently 45 years old. He is a son to father, Roberto Gutierrez Sr. and to mother, Maria del Rosario. His uncle Rey Mysterio Sr. is a well known professional wrestler and trainer. His uncle trained him from an early age.
Early Life
When Rey was 14 years old on April 30, 1989, Gutierrez made his debut in Mexico. He was trained by his uncle Rey Misterio Sr. and she wrestled early on in Mexico where he learned the Lucha Libre high flying style that has been his trademark. Rey has ring names such as La Lagartija Verde (The Green Lizard) and Colibri (Humming Bird) before his uncle gave him the name of Rey Misterio Jr. He was awarded as “Most Improved Wrestler” in Mexico while wrestling as Colibri in 1991.
Rey Mysterio Career
From 1992 to 1995, Rey wrestled with Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion which was based on Mexico. However, in 1995, he signed with “Extreme Championship Wrestling.” The next year, he was signed by “World Championship Wrestling.” In his first match at the Great American Bash, he faced the Cruiserweight Champ Dean Malenko. He mostly fought with high flyers such as Ultimate Dragon, Juventud Guerrera, Billy Kidman and his long rival, Psicosis.
In July 1996, he fought with Malenko, defeating him to win his first Cruiserweight Championship. He was resigned as a champion for three months. During this time, he had to defend his title from many, such as Ultimate Dragon, Super Calo and then Malenko himself. Mysterio eventually lost the title after losing to Malenko at the Halloween Havoc. Later the same year, he challenged Ultimate Dragon for the J-Crown Championship.
The following year, Rey won the Cruiserweight Championship for a second time, after emerging victorious in a match against his opponent Guerrero. In 1998, he won his third Cruiserweight Championship after defeating Juventud in a match. Later the same year, he formed a tag team with Billy Kidman to fight at the Latino World Order. Mysterio forcefully removed his mask after he and his tag partner Konnan lost in a “Hair vs. Mask Match” in 1999.
2000-Present
He expressed strong disappointment over being unmasked. With a new and a better mask, he made his debut with the WWE in 2002. Later in 2005, he teamed up with Eddie Guerrero and together won tag team titles. In 2006, after defeating Randy Orton, he won the World Heavy Weight Champion.
Later in 2009, Rey Mysterio challenged Bradshaw for his Intercontinental Championship. He won the match in just twenty-one seconds, resulting him being the 21st Triple Crown Champion in World Wrestling Entertainment history. Eventually, in 2011, he took part in a tournament for the WWE Championship and won his first WWE Championship. He again signed with Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion after ending his long tenure with WWE in 2015.
On the September 23, 2019, episode of Raw, he won a fatal five-way elimination match, which let him earn a Universal Championship which again repeated on November. On April 20 episode of Raw, he defeated Murphy to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match. However, Mysterio and Dominic later began targeting Rollins, with Mysterio challenging Rollins to an Eye for an Eye match at “The Horror Show at Extreme Rules” and the match is won by removing an opponent’s eyeball. At the event, he lost the match in a gruesome manner, but doctors believe his eye is safe.
Personal Life
Mysterio and his wife Angie have two children together, a son Dominic who was born on April 5, 1997, and a daughter who was born on August 20, 2001. He has tattoos of his children name on his right and left biceps and also has tattoos dedicated to his wife and a tattoo with the initials EG for his best friend and fellow wrestler, Eddie Guerrero who died in 2005.
