At the starting of his career, Alex submitted an audition video for the first season of Oxygen’s The Glee Project in 2011 among 34,000. His self-taped video got viral and had views of over one million. He was among 12 participants and competed for a seven-episode arc on Glee. He worked with Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch, Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, and Naya Rivera. Alex portrayed himself as an out-gay man and became the series’ first runner-up. His act made him be in many seasons then. His character paid him the opportunity to be in several roles.
He became the male-to-female transgender teenager in “Wade “Unique” Adams”. His performance in the show was described as bold along with “remarkable restraint and powerful vocals”. Furthermore, he made his appearance in the night show “Bill O’Reilly” which is mainly concerned about the children watching the show unsupervised might be influenced to experiment with the term “alternative lifestyle”.
Newell in 2012 also was selected into the Berklee College of music, though he moved to Los Angeles for the fourth season of Glee. Also known as a famous singer, Newell has sung at numerous events like Coachella Festival, “Governors Ball Music”, and “BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend”. Moreover, he has sung at many LGBT events and pride festivals.
Like his debut, he had a contract with Big Beat Records in October 2013. Adam Anders produced it. His cover song of “Nobody to Love” of Sigma released on June 3, 2014. Moreover, in 2015, he provided feature vocals for the re-used version of “Stronger”, a song of Clean Bandit. In the same month, he produced a disco-house stylization “Show Me, Love”. Moving on to his singing career, he sang for more than dozens of songs. On April 8, 2016, he released a new single along with POWER producers Nile Rodgers, and DJ Cassidy named “Killed the Lights”. Newell has also performed in his biggest collaboration and a charitable single “Hands”.
After his successful music collaborations, Newell also got the chance to play the character of Asaka in the revival of “Once on This Island” as his Broadcast debut, in 2017. Also, he marked his return as a featured artist by house musician Kokiri on the song “Other Side of Love”. About his personal life, he identifies himself as a cis gender-nonconforming gay man.
