Who is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador?

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is a Mexican politician and former President of Mexico. He was born on the 13th of November, 1953 in Tepetitan, Mexico. He is commonly referred to by his initials AMLO.


Obrador studied political science in his bachelor year. Later, Obrador took a hiatus from his studies to participate in politics. He was a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Tabasco in 1987. The director of the Indigenous Institute of Tabasco was Obrador’s first public position in 1977. He promoted the edition of books in the indigenous language. He also developed the project of the chontal ridge. Obrador joined the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) in 1989.

Furthermore, he was the party’s 1994 candidate for Governor of Tabasco.
Also, between 1996 and 1999, he was the national leader of the PRD. He was elected Head of Government of Mexico City in 2000. However, he left the PRD in 2012. He founded the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) in 2014. He led this until 2017. Obrador is often described as a populist and a nationalist. Furthermore, he is a nationally relevant politician for more than two decades.

Obrador became the candidate for the 2018 presidential election for the third time and represented Juntos Haremos Historia. He won the election in a landslide victory and had 53 percent of the votes.

Personal Life of Manuel Lopez

Obrador returned to Tabasco after attending school from 1973 to 1976. He held various government positions in Tabasco. Furthermore, he was a professor at the Juárez Autonomous University of Tabasco. He married Rocio Beltran Medina on the 8th of April, 1978. They have three sons together. His first wife died on the 12th of January, 2003 due to respiratory arrest.
Later, Obrador married Beatriz Gutierrez Muller on the 16th of October, 2006. They worked in the Mexico City government together as Head of Government of Mexico City. They have one son together.
Obrador has a variety of nicknames. Some of them are El Molido, El Americano, La Piedra, El Comandante, and El Peje.
His favourite baseball team is St. Louis Cardinals.
