Who is Cate Blanchett?

Cate Blanchett or Catherine Elise Blanchett is an Australian actress and theatre director, well-known as one of Australia’s most successful actress. You may know her from movies like Blue Jasmine, I’m Not there, Carol and Ocean’s 8. 51-year-old Cate has been in the entertainment industry since 1992.

Bio

Blanchett was born on May 14, 1969, with the name Catherine Elise Blanchett, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. She is the daughter of father DeWitt Blanchett Jr. and mother June Gamble. By profession, her mother is a property developer whereas her father is a former United States Navy Chief Petty Officer. Furthermore,  Cate has two siblings, an older brother named Bob Blanchett and a younger sister named Genevieve Blanchett.  Her mother has raised the family on her own as her father died of a heart attack when she was only ten years old.

Education

Talking about her educational qualifications, Blanchett started her studies from Ivanhoe East Primary School and Ivanhoe Grammer School. For higher education, she chose the Methodist Ladies’ College. She chose the University of Melbourne for further studies, however, dropped out after a year. She also worked at a nursing home in her late teens and early twenties. Cate graduated successfully with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the National Institute of Dramatic Art later.

Career

Cate started her acting career through plays. Her first stage production was the 1992 Electra, where she played the role of Electra. In the same year, she played the role of Patient Griselda in the play, Top Girls. Furthermore, she was also well noticed in the play Hamlet, where she played the role of Ophelia in 1994. Cate’s first movie role came in 1996, where she played the role of Rosie in the short film Parklands. A year later, she appeared in movies Paradise Road, Thank God He Met Lizzie, and Oscar and Lucinda.

She then acted in the acting projects “Bangers,” “Pushing Tin” and “The Talented Mr Ripley” in 1999. She was also cast in the film series “The Lord of the Rings” as Galadriel.

2002-2011

Blanchett also appeared in the flick “Heaven” in 2002. In the same year, she played the roles of Galadriel and Philippa in the movies The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and Heaven respectively. The next year, she appeared in movies Coffee and Cigarettes, Veronica Guerin, The Missing, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Eventually the following year, she appeared in the drama “Babel” and also in the drama The Good German. She then played a cameo role in the movie “Hot Fuzz” in 2007. Soon after, she appeared in the sequel for Elizabeth film series as Queen Elizabeth I.

Subsequently, then she voiced Granmamare in the film Ponyo. Cate and her husband became the artistic directors and CEOs of Sydney Theatre Company and acted in STC’s production of A Streetcar Named Desire. She then starred in the war film “Robin Hood” in 2010. Eventually the following year, she starred in the action flick Hanna.

2012-Present

Cate acted in the film series “The Hobbit” from 2012 to 2014. During that time, she also voiced for “Family Guy” and also appeared in the films like “The Turning,” “Blue Jasmine” and The Monuments Men. However, in 2015, she starred in five films including “Knight of Cups,” “Cinderella,” “Carol,” “Truth” and Manifesto. Eventually later two years, she starred in the play “The Present” and also in the flick Thor: Ragnarok. Blanchett appeared in the film “Ocean’s Eleven” in 2018.

In 2019, Cate played the voice role of Valka in the movie titled How to Train your Dragon: The Hidden World. In the same year, she played the roles of Bernadette Fox and a Narrator in movies Where’d You Go, Bernadette and Sweet Tooth respectively. She will appear in the movie Nightmare Aley as Lilith Ritter. Cate also appeared in 6 episodes of Stateless as Pat Masters in 2020. In the same year, she appeared in 9 episodes of Mrs America as Phyllis Schlafly and one episode of The Simpsons as the voice role of Elaine Wolff.

Personal Life

Cate married Andrew Upton, an American playwright and screenwriter on the 29th of December, 1997. The couple met on the set of a TV show in 1996. They have four children together, three sons and a daughter named Dashiell John Upton, Roman Robert Upton, Ignatius Martin Upton and Edith Vivian Patricia Upton who was adopted in 2015.
