Who is Ilhan Omar?

Ilhan Omar is an American politician serving as the US Representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district since 2019. She was born to Nur Omar Mohamed and his wife, Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein. Ilhan was the youngest among seven siblings. She was born with the star sign Libra. Ilhan holds an American nationality. She stands the height of 5 feet 6 inches and weighs about 52 kg. Also, she has been able to maintain her body fit with the body measurement 34-26-35. When Ilhan was eight, her family fled from civil war-torn Somalia. They took refuge in a Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya for four years. Later they arrived in New York in 1992.

Education

Ilhan attended Edison High School. There she was a volunteer as a student organizer. Later, she enrolled at North Dakota State University in 2011, from where she got her bachelor’s degrees in political science and international studies. Also, she was a Policy Fellow at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

Early Career

After her graduation, Ilhan was a community nutrition educator at the University of Minnesota in 2006. Also, she worked in the Greater Minneapolis-Saint Paul till 2009. Later, she worked as a child nutrition outreach coordinator at the Minnesota Department of Education. In 2013, she worked in Andrew Johnson‘s successful campaign for Minneapolis City Council.

Political Career of Ilhan Omar

In the year 2016, Ilhan went to the DFL Party in District 60B. She lived there for the past two decades. She won the DFL Primary, and Republican opponent Abdimalik Askar withdrew his candidacy. Then, Ilhan became the first Somali American legislature in the US. Also, she served as an Assistant Minority Leader for the DFL caucus.

Furthermore, Ilhan ran from Minnesota’s 5th congressional district from the DFL party, for the United States House of Representatives. She defeated her opponent Jennifer Zielinski on November 6, 2018, general election. Besides, she was the first woman to were a hijab on the House floor after the ban of head coverings was modified.
