Jonathan Gold is a well-known name in America. He was a famous food and music critic who won the Pulitzer Prize. He won the Prize in 2007, and also in 2011, he became a finalist. Also, he is the first food critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Gold worked for the Los Angeles Times. Earlier, he worked for LA Weekly and Gourmet magazine. Jonathon Gold was born on July 28, 1960, in Los Angeles, California, Unites States. Gold’s father served as a probation officer, and his mother worked as a teacher. Likewise, he grew up along with his brother Mark Gold. Mark Gold served as the president of the Santa Monica-based non-profit organization, Heal the Bay. Presently, Mark is an associate director of UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability.

Furthermore, he held an American nationality, and as per ethnicity, he belonged to a mix of Jewish and Judaism. He had the star sign of Leo.

Professional Career

Gold joined the University of California, Los Angeles, and studied art and music. During his time in the university, he started working as a proofreader in the LA Weekly in 1982. He worked as an editor for the Weekly in the music section of the newspaper. Earlier, he wrote the classical music then later to the hip-hop.

Eventually, having the support of Jay Levin, founder of Weekly, in 1986, he initiated “Counter Intelligence,” reporting the unlisted restaurants in the ethnic neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Then, he went for the Los Angeles Times and wrote for seven years; 1990 to 1996. Also, during the time, he wrote reviews for upscale restaurants for the magazines. Furthermore, he also wrote music stories for several other magazines. He wrote for Blender, Spin, Rolling Stone, and Details, which are all the American music magazines.

Meanwhile, in 1999, he relocated to New York City from Los Angeles for working as a restaurant critic for Gourmet magazine. Moreover, he became a finalist for two times for the National Magazine Award. The American Society if Magazin Editors nominated him for the award.

Then in 2001, he returned to Los Angeles and continued his work in the Weekly. He published a prominent annual best-restaurant list, “Jonathan Gold’s 99 Essential LA Restaurants”. Likewise, extending his record, he published “Jonathan Gold’s 101 Best Restaurants” in the Times.

Furthermore, in 2007, he won the Pulitzer Prize and became the first food critic to win the Prize. Then, in 2012 he returned to the Los Angeles Times. In 2015, a documentary film, “City of Gold,” released relating to him, which aired at the Sundance Film Festival.

About his own life, he was a married man. He tied a knot with Laurie Ochoa. Laurie worked as an editor at the Los Angeles Times as well as an editor-in-chief of the LA Weekly. The couple fell in love during the time. Also, the couple was blessed with two children; Isabel and Leon.

Sadly, on July 21, 2018, Gold died due to pancreatic cancer. His disease had been diagnosed in early July 2018. Gold died at St. Vincent Medical Center, in Los Angeles, at the age of 57 on Saturday evening. His death was before a week of hid the 58th birthday. Being loved by numerous people, his death had been devastating for the food community. Also, his death became a shock as even his friends did not know his illness.
