Dave Matthews was born on January 9, 1967, as the name David John Matthews, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was born to his father John Matthews and his mother Valerie Matthews. John served as an IT giant, IBM. Likewise, he grew up along with his three siblings; Anne Matthews, Jane Matthews, and Pete Matthews.
Furthermore, he holds an American nationality. He has the star sign of Capricorn. Standing height of 6 feet 2 inches (188 cm), and weigh about 70 kg, he has been able to maintain his body fit.
Early Life of Dave Matthews
When Dave was two years old, his family transferred to Yorktown Heights in Westchester County, New York, US. In 1977, his father died and his family relocated to Johannesburg. While their stay in New York, Dave’s mother took Dave to a concert where Pete Seeger had a performance.
For education, he attended Damelin College high school. He certified by the school in 1985. Then forcibly, he joined the South African military service to fight against the growing problem of Apartheid in the region. However, to escape the service, he left South Africa and relocated to New York in 1986. Working in IBM for a brief time, he went to his mother in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Dave had an interest in playing guitar from an early age. Just at the age of nine, he started playing guitar. However, publicly he performed for the first time in Charlottesville.
Career
He became a member of the local band “Devastator”. The band performed in some shows over several months. Then, the band separated. Then, he joined with a famous guitarist, Tim Reynolds. During the time, Dave joined Tim on the stage and subsequently, he recorded his own songs. Moreover, he had his debut professional musical gig singing “Meaningful Love” at Milki Liszt Dance Company. Also, he wrote songs like “I’ll Back You Up”, “The Song That Jane Likes” and “Recently”.
Dave Matthews Band (DMB)
In 1991, Dave formed his own band named “Dave Matthews Band”. He featured members; LeRoi Moore, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, and Boyd Tinsley. Besides, Peter Griesar left the band in 1993. The band displayed their first show on March 14, 1991, at Trax Nightclub in Charlottesville. Eventually, on September 27, 1994, the band debuted an album “Under the Table and Dreaming”. The album became a huge hit and ranked 11th in the Billboard 200 chart. The band released the album on the memory of his older sister who was murdered by her husband.
After two years, in 1996, the band released the second album “Crash”. The album, however, did not go appreciated. Later, in the late 1990s. they released the other two albums “Live at Red Rocks”, and “Before These Crowded Streets”. The second album became a huge hit and loved by the critics. Also, it peaked at the top position on the music chart.
Furthermore, Dave voiced over the songs in other bands like “Blue Man Group”. In 2003, he sang a track “Sing-Along” in the second album “Complex” of the band. Likewise, though he had been busy with his band, he managed to give a solo album “Some Devil”. The single “Gravedigger” from the album gained a huge success and also peaked at the chartbuster. Besides, he won a Grammy Award.
Acting
Besides his musical career, he has also appeared on big screens. However, before been known as a musician, he played a brief role as an actor in Offstage Theatre and Live Arts Theatre at Charlottesville. In the early 1990s, he played in the Offstage Theatre’s “Just Say No.” which is still loved by many people.
Likewise, in 2003, he played in “Where the Red Fern Grows” and “Because of Winn-Dixie” in 2005. Eventually, he appeared in a short role in the film “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” in 2005.
