She is a daughter to mother, Luisa Vargas, who served as an entertainer and educator, and to father, Alberto Ramirez, who served as an oceanographer and a professor. Her parents separated when she was only eight years old, which led her to settle in San Diego with her mother. Despite facing a lot of racism and discrimination, she followed her dream and auditioned for many roles.
