Hield, firstly enrolled in Sunrise Christian Academy, located in Wichita, Kansas. During high school, he played for the basketball team. Later, he attended the University of Oklahoma. Then, he played for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Eventually, in his rookie season, he started 37 of the 57 games, with the Pelicans. He scored an average of 8.6 points, along with 1.4 assists, and 2.9 rebounds, in each game.
