Campeones cup

The Campeones Cup is North American soccer that takes place annually. The winner of the “Campeon de Campeones” from Liga MX and the champions of the past Major league Soccer season hence compete with each other. The competition was first established in 2018 by the two leagues.

The winner of the MLS Cup contest it, to decide the “Major League Soccer seasons” winner. The winners of Apertura and Clausura tournaments in Liga MX compete in this cup annually. The competition is hence based in either Canada or the United States, hosted by the Major League Soccer team, at the end of the summer. The format of the Campeones cup is also similar to that of Japanese-South American Suruga Bank Citizenship, hosted by the Japanese team.

On March 13, 2018, the competition was announced as a part of an inter-league partnership that would also organize future MLS All-Star Game having an all-star team from Liga MX, and also the youth competitions. The two leagues had previously from 2007 to 2010, fielded teams in the SuperLiga. Currently, it is also competing in the CONCACAF Champions League. The inter-league partnership was also spurred for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by the joint North American bid and desire of improving the level of play in CONCACAF. Toronto FC hosted the inaugural on September 19, 2018, at BMO Field in Toronto, where Tigres UANL won.

Currently, the second edition of the Campeones Cup, an annual North American football match is also referred as the 219 Campeones Cup, of which the match is contested between the previous Major League Soccer season, Atlanta United FC, and the winner of the Campeon de Campeones from Liga MX, America. Atlanta United in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the host of the match, on August 14, 2019. With the seating capacity of 71,000, Atlanta United FC hosted the match at their home stadium, Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

  • Also, in 2019, the game was between the MLS team, Atlanta United FC, and Liga MX team, America, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia, US, with 40,128 attendees. Atlanta United FC won by 3-2.
