He featured as the lead role of Ang Lee’s war drama “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” based on Ben Foundation’s novel in 2016. The following year, he had a supporting role in the English drama film “The Sense of an Ending”. He appeared in Yorgos Lanthimos’ award-winning period drama “The Favourite” in 2018.

Eventually the same year, he also had supporting roles in the films “Operation Finale,” “Boy Erased” and “Mary Queen of Scots”. While “Boy Erased” is a biographical drama film following the son of Baptist parents who are compelled to participate in a gay conversion therapy program. Subsequently, “Mary Queen of Scots” is about a historical drama flick about the life of Mary I of Scotland who reigned over Scotland from 1542 to 1567. However, he also received the Trophee Chopard alongside Elizabeth Debicki at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2019, Alwyn co-starred as slave owner Gideon Brodess in the biographical award-winning drama “Harriet” which was about abolitionist Harriet Tubman. It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2019. Eventually the same year in August, he joined the cast of “The Souvenir Part II” and also appeared as Bob Cratchit in the BBC/FX three-part miniseries “A Christmas Carol” in December.
