High School and College Career

Firstly, Leonard attended Mainland High School, located in Daytona Beach, Florida. During his high school, he was a two-sport athlete in football and track. In his senior years, he led the Mainland to reach the semi-finals of the FHSAA 6A state, with 103 tackles and 10.5 sack. Furthermore,Rivals.com ranked him the fifth-best strongside defensive end recruit in his class.

Later, during his college days, Leonard began with nine of thirteen games in 2012 as a true freshman. He recorded 64 tackles, eight sacks, along with an interception. Moreover, Leonard became the Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year. Likewise, in 2013, as a sophomore, he transferred to the defensive end and had the record of six sacks and 74 tackles. He was in the list of a first-team All Pac-12 selection.

In 2014, during his junior year, he had a record of 80 tackles and 7 sacks. Furthermore, the American Football Coaches Asociation (AFCA) and ESPN named him in the Team MVP, first-team All-Pac-12, and an All-American. Eventually, after his junior season, he would enter the 2015 NFL Draft for his senior years.

The New York Jets selected Leonard. He signed a four-year contract with the Jets on May 8, 2015, worth $18.6 million, becoming the highest selected lineman since Darrell Russell in 1997.


On August 11, 2015, Leonard debuted against the game with Detroit Lions, a group having players like Matthew Stafford, in the first preseason. In the second preseason, he made 4 tackles and a sack. Likewise, in preseason 3, Leonard suffered from a knee injury and had to leave the game. Later, on September 13, 2015, he debuted on his regular season and made a total of 5 tackles. In total, he played 16 games in 2015 and had a record of 63 tackles and 3 sack.


On September 11, 2016, for his multi-sack game, he had 2.5 sacks. In the season, he made a record of 7 pockets. Furthermore, for the 2017 Pro Bowl, he got select as a first-team alternate.


In the 2017 season, Leonard played 16 games. He recorded his career-low 47 tackles and 2 sacks.


Sadly, in Week 16, Leonard disqualified in his NFL career as he threw a punch on Bryan Bulaga. Later, on December 29, he was fined $43,449.
