Who is Mariah Carey?

Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist. In 1988, she had signed to Columbia Records and rose to fame after releasing her eponymous debut album two years later. She is the first artist in history to have their first five singles become consecutive number one songs on the Billboard Hot 100. She is also renowned for her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style and signature use of the whistle register. Mariah is referred to as the “Songbird Supreme” by “Guinness World Records. She has sold over 220 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Furthermore, She holds the record with a total of 19 songs topping the Billboard Hot 100 and also holds the record for the most number-one singles by a solo artist.

Bio

Mariah was born on March 27, 1969, or 1970 in Huntington, New York. She is currently 50 or 51 years old. Carey is the third and the youngest child of Patricia who is a former opera singer and vocal coach and to Alfred Roy Carey who us an aeronautical engineer. She adopted her last name Carey from her Venezuelan grandfather. After her parents’ divorce, she had little contact with her father, and her mother worked several jobs to support the family.

Early Life

Mariah had excelled in the arts, such as music and literature, during her years in elementary school. She started writing poetry and lyrics while attending Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York and graduated in 1987. She began vocal training under the tutelage of her mother. Her work in the Long Island music scene gave her opportunities to work with musicians such as Gavin Christopher and Ben Margulies with whom she co-wrote material for her demo tape. She landed a gig singing backup for Puerto Rican freestyle singer Brenda K. Starr.

Career

Mariah worked as a temp and juggled with a number of the odd job such as beautician, heir sweeper in a salon, waitress, etc before her big break. After several years of struggling, she earned ample money and finally, moved to a well-off sector in New York with her family. She was signed by Columbia Records from which she got four No.1 hits in 1988. In 1991, she released a more mature album “Emotions.” Eventually, in the following year, her MTV Unplugged version awed critics and went on to earn a triple-platinum certification.

Some of her singles through the 90s include “Endless Love” and “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Eventually, in 1995, she explored new avenues with R&B and hip hop songs and released “Daydream.” She also introduced “Breathy vocals” with her new album “Butterfly” in 1997. The following year, she recorded a duet with the famous. Whitney Houston titled “When You Believe” for the animated film Prince of Egypt. The following year, her ninth album, “Charmbracelet” was released.

2005-Present

In 2005, Carey released “The Emancipation of Mini” which is largely considered as her comeback album. Eventually in 2008 album, “E=MC2” brought her back to the top of the pop-music charts in the United States. The following year, she returned to films with “Precious” in 2009. She released “Merry Christmas II You” in 2010. She collaborated with teenage sensation, Justin Bieber for her holiday album “Under the Mistletoe” in 2011. The following year, she also wrote and recorded the song “Mesmerized” for the film “Paperboy” and also appeared as a judge on the reality singing shows The American Idol. Eventually the next year, she collaborated with a number of record producers and musicians for her next album “The Art of Letting Go.”

In 2018, she signed a worldwide deal with Live Nation Entertainment. The same year, she planned to release her fifteenth studio album and released a new song GTFO. Her album’s lead single “With You” became her highest-charity non-holiday song on the US Adult Contemporary chart. In 2019, she re-released her holiday album “Merry Christmas” for its 25^th anniversary. In 2020, it was announced that she would be inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame during that year’s ceremony. She was one of the headliners for the iHeart Living Room Concert of America hosted by Elton John. The event raised over $8 million in the fight against COVID-19 again in another event she raised $115 million for the same cause. She also announced the title of and released the cover art for her memoir, the book “The Meaning of Mariah Carey” in July 2020.

Carey started dating Tommy Mottola while recording Music Box and married on June 5, 1993. The couple got separated on May 30, 1997. Then, she dated singer Luis Miguel from 1998 to 2001. Eventually, she married Nick Cannon on April 30, 2008, and gave birth to fraternal twins, Moroccan and Monroe on April 30, 2011. The couple divorced on December 12, 2014. In 2015, she started dating Australian billionaire James Packer and engaged on January 21, 2016. but got separated by October. Then she dated American choreographer Bryan Tanaka in 2016.
