Mark Richard Hamill is an American actor, voice actor and writer. He is best known for playing his role as Like Skywalker in the Star Wars film series. He is also widely known for his appearances in the films including “Corvette Summer” and “The Bed Red One”. Furthermore, He has also appeared on stage in several theatre productions in his early years. He is a prolific voice actor and has contributed in many animated films, series and video games. Mark was born on September 25, 1951, with the name Mark Richard Hamill in Oakland, California, United States. He is a son to mother, Virginia Suzanne and to father, U.S. Navy Captain William Thomas Hamill. He has six siblings, two brothers named Will and Patrick and four sisters named Terry, Jan, Jeanie and Kim. His father’s changes of station and attendant family move led to the Hamill children switching schools often.
Early Life
He went to Walsingham Academy and Poe Middle School in his elementary years. He moved to the 5900 blocks of Castleton Drive in San Diego, California at the age of 11 and attended Hale Junior High School. During his first year at James Madison High School, his family moved to Virginia so, he attended Annandale High School. His father was stationed in Japan by his junior year where he attended and also was a member of the Drama Club at Nile C. Kinnick High School. He graduated in 1969. Later, he enrolled at Los Angeles City College and majored in drama.
Career
In 1977, Mark auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker in the space opera film “Star Wars” in 1977 and won his role. It was one of his breakthrough roles in his career. Eventually the next year, he played the lead role in the adventure comedy film “Corvette Summer.” In the same year, he also appeared in the TV film “Star Wars: Holiday Special.”
Again in 1980, he reprised his role as Skywalker in the film “The Empire Strikes Back” which was the first sequel to “Star Wars.” He also starred in the third film of the Star Wars franchise, “Return to Jedi,” reprising his role. Eventually, he appeared in several other movies over the next few years like “Slipstream,” “The Guyver” and “Timerunner.” He also voiced several characters including the malicious super-villain “The Joker” in the animated TV series “Batman: The Animated Series” from 1992 to 1994. He followed it by reprising the role in the sequel “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.”
1995-Present
Mark’s other movies that he worked over the next few years include “Watchers Reborn,” “Wing Commander,” “Sinbad: Beyond the Veil of Mists,” “Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker,” “Comic Book: The Movie,” “Ultimate Avengers II,” “Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey” and “Scooby-Doo: Camp Scare.” Eventually, in 2012, he appeared in the British horror film “Airbourne” which was his second British film since “Britannia Hospital.” He also starred in the supporting role in the action spy comedy film “Kingsman: The Secret Service.”
He again reprised his role in the sequel “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as Luke Skywalker in 2015. Eventually, he again voiced “Batman: The Killing Joke” in 2016 and starred in “Brigsby Bear” and “Bunyan and Babe” in 2017. The same year, he again reprised his role in the sequel “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” Throughout his career, Mark has done several voice roles in several TV series as well. Some of them are “Metalocalypse,” “Ultimate Spiderman” and “Trollhunters.” He has also worked for several video games such as “Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger,” “Batman: Vengeance,” “Soldiers of Fortune: Double Helix,” “Yakuza” and “Batman: Arkham City.”
