Sean Monahan

Sean Monahan is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who plays for the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League and is also an alternate captain for the team. He was born on the 12th of October, 1994 on Brampton, Ontario, Canada to Cathy and John Monahan.

Monahan attended the St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School where he played minor hockey and lacrosse for the Brampton Excelsiors. He played with the Mississauga Rebels and captained for the Rebels to an OHL Cup title and was named the most valuable player of the tournament in 2010. He finished the 2009-10 season with 46 goals and 40 assists in 47 games and was later got into the selection by the Ottawa 67’s in the first round at the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection draft as the 16th overall. He got an invitation to play in the 2011 World U-17 Hockey Challenge. Sean then won gold for Team Ontario.

He completed his first OHL Season scoring 47 points in 65 games. Monahan joined the Canadian Under-18 National Team for the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and scored a goal to help Canada win a gold medal. He was one of the OHL’s top scorers in 2011-12 and was also named to the OHL’s Second All-Star team and was the 67’s representative on the league’s All-Scholastic team. Monahan served as the team’s captain in the first half of the season. He got an invitation to Team Canada’s selection camp for the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey. But, he wasn’t selected and also missed 10 games during the season after being suspended.

Sean Monahan was one of the top prospects for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked him as the 5th best North American Skater in its final ranking. He got the rank of 9th overall by the International Scouting Services. He got a high rate for his intelligence on the ice, playmaking, and stickhandling and also for his faceoff ability. Monahan got into the selection by the Calgary Flames in the first round as the sixth overall.

He made his first NHL Debut on the 3rd of October, 2013 against the Washington Capitals. He scored his first career point in the game. His first goal was against goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets in a 4-3 win. Sean became the first junior-eligible player to make the full-time jump to the flames in 33 years. He also became the first Flames rookie and first rookie forward since Jarome Iginla to score 20 goals.

Monahan signed a seven-year, $44.625 million contract extension with the Calgary Flames valid till 2023. He scored his first career hat trick in the second period in a 5-4 win against the Philadelphia Flyers. Sean scored his 100th goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning on the 23rd of February, 2017. He was the 6th youngest active player to achieve this milestone. He also became the fastest player in the Flames’ franchise to record 9 career overtime goals in a game against the Montreal Canadiens on the 7th of December, 2017 in a 3-2 win.
