Who are Tampa Bay Rays?

The Tampa Bay Rays are a St. Petersburg, Florida based American professional baseball team. The Rays compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The team’s home venue has been Tropicana Field since its inception.

An ownership group led by Vince Naimoli was approved on the 9th of March, 1995 following nearly three decades of trying to gain an expansion franchise or convincing existing teams to relocate to the Tampa Bay Area. The first game for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays was the 1998 Major League Baseball season.

They finished in the last place in the AL East in all but the 2004 season, when they finished second-to-last, so the first decade of their play was not that noteworthy. Stuart Sternberg changed the team’s name from “Devil Rays” to “Rays” after the 2007 season. The 2008 season was the first winning season for the Tampa Bay Rays, which was the AL East championship, and the pennant although they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series that year. The Rays have played in the postseason in 2010, 2011, and 2013 since then.

The Tampa Bay Rays consider the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees as their greatest rivals. Regarding the former. They also have an intrastate interleague rivalry with the Miami Marlins with whom they play in the Citrus Series.
